OpenAI’s GPT3 revolution explained
GPT-3 a language model with a whopping 175 billion parameter for comparison GPT-2 had 1.5 billion parameters.
OpenAI is an AI (Artificial Intelligence) research and deployment company founded by Elon Musk, Sam Altman, backed by Peter Theil and others. The company mainly works on upgrading artificial intelligence, and GPT-3 is one of their many projects.
GPT-3 (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) is a language model that is capable of producing texts (content or any other writing forms) that can be comparable with a human’s level of writing, if not better. In technical terms, it is a big artificial neural network (ANN), which takes the help of Deep Learning (a subset in machine learning).
The whole process is quite simple: once you enter a piece of information or text to give context, it will predict the best possible content that suits your commanded words and delivers you the informed and elaborated text. It’s a “text-in, text-out” interface as the company says it. Here is where the neural network comes into play.
Just input the bare minimum keywords and, you can get an entire paragraph written by considering those keywords. For example, look at the article below that is entirely written using GPT -3.
GPT-3 has the power to not only produce written content but also codes (programming). GPT 3 has multiple uses such as writing poems or creating a blog post. It can also replace the customer chat support system by generating automated responses to customer queries.
OpenAI has released GPT-3 as an API (Application Programming Interface) and not as an Open-source Tool, which gives more power to control it closely. As of now, one needs to be on the waitlist to take access from OpenAI to use this masterpiece. However, through the limited access, there have been tons of applications/services that have been produced. To name a few: Flowrite (a writing tool), Tailwind CSS (UI Coding tool), and GPT-3 Blog Idea Generator.
This technology however advanced is yet to incorporate a lot more features and is continuously being improved upon. For example, GPT-3 is not able to filter out content that is racist orsexist. To avoid such and other misuses through the existing loopholes in the algorithm is one of the reasons the technology is not available to the public entirely. The CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman wrote in 2019 that “GPT-3 is impressive but, it still has serious weaknesses and sometimes makes silly mistakes. AI is going to change the world, but GPT-3 is just a very early glimpse.”
OpenAI had kickstarted as a non-profit company and, this is their first commercial product. The product being way ahead of its time doesn’t have a big market yet hence the company is experimenting to see its viable options for monetization. Microsoft has got an exclusive license to use GPT-3 language model, and even Reddit is thinking about how they can incorporate GPT-3 and make the best of it.
With time as the technology gets better, it will be publicly accessible and relatively cheaper. That is when SMBs and individuals can incorporate this tool for easy planning and creation of content. The world has started changing and moving towards AI technology to replace or assist most human activities, and products like GPT-3 show us a glimpse of this future.
Taking all into account, we can say this technology will take some time to mature. Do you perceive this technology as a potential threat or strength to the well-developed industry (content writing or web development)? Let me know!
